Ingredients:
Wine Base:
- 1 (750 ml) bottle dry red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or a Spanish Rioja work well)
Sweeteners and Flavor Enhancers:
- 1/2 cup orange liqueur (Triple Sec or Cointreau)
- 1/4 cup brandy
- 1/4 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed is best)
- 2 tablespoons sugar or honey (adjust to taste)
Fruit:
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)
- 1 orange, sliced into rounds
- 1 lemon or lime, sliced into rounds
- Ice (optional): Around 1-2 cups, if needed for desired consistency
Equipment
- Large pitcher
- Ice cube trays
- Blender
Instructions:
1. Make the Red Wine Ice Cubes:
- Pour the bottle of red wine into ice cube trays.
- Freeze overnight or until completely solid.
2. Prep the Fruit:
- Wash and slice the orange, lemon/lime into rounds.
3. Assemble the Slushie:
- In a blender, combine the frozen red wine cubes, orange liqueur, brandy, orange juice, sugar/honey, and frozen mixed berries.
- Blend on high speed until you have a smooth, slushy consistency.
- If the mixture is too thick, add some ice cubes and blend again.
- Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
4. Serve:
- Pour the sangria slushies into glasses.
- Garnish each glass with orange and lemon or lime slices.
- Enjoy immediately!
Tips:
- Customize your fruit: Add other summer fruits like sliced peaches, nectarines, or chopped apples to your liking.
- Make ahead: The red wine cubes can be frozen well in advance.
- Large batch: Easily double or triple the recipe for a crowd.
- Traditional Sangria: If you prefer, let some of the wine ice cubes melt in the pitcher with sliced fruit for a few hours to make a more classic sangria before blending portions into slushies.
