Yields: 1 medium-sized pizza crust
Prep time: 15 minutes
Rest time: 10-15 minutes
Cook time: 15-20 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1 cup warm water (100-110°F/ 38-43°C)
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 2 and 1/4 teaspoons (one packet) active dry yeast or instant yeast
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let stand for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy.
- Make the dough: Add olive oil, salt, and 2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms. Gradually incorporate the remaining flour until the dough comes together in a ball and is slightly tacky but not overly sticky.
- Knead (optional): For a slightly chewier crust, turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 3-5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Rest the dough: Lightly grease the bowl you used before and place the dough ball back inside. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let the dough rest in a warm place for 10-15 minutes. This will allow it to rise slightly.
- Preheat oven: While the dough rests, preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and lightly grease a pizza pan or baking sheet.
- Shape the pizza: Once rested, punch down the dough and roll or stretch onto the prepared pan, forming your desired crust thickness.
- Top and bake: Add your favorite pizza sauce, cheese, and toppings. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Tips:
- No-knead option: For an even easier option, skip the kneading and let the dough rest for an hour or two. It will become softer and easier to shape.
- Different flour: You can use bread flour for a slightly chewier crust.
- Flavor boost: Add a teaspoon of Italian seasoning or garlic powder to the dough for extra flavor.
Enjoy your delicious homemade pizza!
