Ingredients
For the Burgers
- 1 lb ground turkey (93% lean or leaner)
- 1 medium Granny Smith apple, peeled and grated
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For the Caramelized Onions
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium sweet onion, thinly sliced
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of black pepper
For Serving
- 4 whole-wheat hamburger buns
- 4 slices brie cheese
- Arugula or spring mix
- Optional: Honey mustard, Dijon mustard, or your favorite burger spread
Instructions
1. Caramelize the Onions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions, season with salt and pepper.
- Cook, stirring occasionally for 20-25 minutes, or until the onions are deeply browned and caramelized.
- Remove from heat and set aside.
2. Make the Turkey Burgers
- In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, grated apple, chopped onion, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Mix gently until ingredients are well combined. Do not overmix.
- Shape the mixture into 4 equal patties.
3. Cook the Burgers
- Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat.
- Lightly brush the patties with olive oil (optional).
- Cook the burgers for 4-5 minutes per side, or until cooked through and the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
4. Assemble the Burgers
- During the last minute of cooking, top each burger with a slice of brie cheese.
- Toast the buns if desired.
- Place a bed of arugula or spring mix on the bottom bun.
- Top with a cooked burger patty and a generous spoonful of caramelized onions.
- Add desired condiments and the top bun.
