Yields: About 2 ½ cups
Prep time: 10 minutes
Steeping time: 2-3 days
Ingredients:
- 1 (750ml) bottle of vodka: Choose a mid-range quality vodka for the best balance of flavor and cost-effectiveness.
- 6 regular-sized black tea bags: Black tea provides a robust base flavor. You can experiment with flavored black teas for a twist (e.g., Earl Grey).
- 1 cup granulated sugar: You can adjust the amount of sugar to your desired sweetness.
- 2 ½ cups water
Equipment:
- Large mason jar or pitcher with a lid
- Fine-mesh strainer
- Clean bottles for storing
Instructions
Make the sweet tea concentrate:
- Combine the sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Remove the pan from heat and add the tea bags.
- Let the tea steep for 5-7 minutes. Avoid over-steeping, as this can make the tea bitter.
- Remove the tea bags and allow the tea concentrate to cool completely.
Infuse the vodka:
- Pour the cooled sweet tea concentrate into the mason jar or pitcher.
- Add the vodka and stir to combine.
- Seal the jar tightly with a lid.
Steep:
- Store the jar in a cool, dark place for 2-3 days. The longer you steep, the stronger the tea flavor will be.
Strain and bottle:
- After the steeping period, strain the infused vodka through a fine-mesh strainer lined with a cheesecloth into clean bottles. Discard the tea bags.
Store and enjoy!
- Store the sweet tea vodka in the refrigerator for up to several months. Enjoy it chilled over ice, in cocktails, or as a delightful addition to iced tea.
Tips & Variations:
- Fruit twist: Add slices of fresh fruit like peaches, strawberries, or lemons to the infusion for an extra flavor dimension.
- Citrusy kick: Squeeze a bit of lemon or orange juice into the strained sweet tea vodka for brightness.
- Herb infusion: Add a few sprigs of fresh mint or basil during the steeping process for a refreshing twist.
- Gift idea: This makes a lovely homemade gift! Put it into decorative bottles with personalized labels.
