Yields: About 1 cup
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rolled oats (old-fashioned oats are best)
Equipment:
- High-powered blender or food processor
Instructions:
- Add oats to blender: Place the rolled oats in your blender or food processor.
- Process to a fine powder: Blend on high speed until the oats have transformed into a fine, powdery flour. This should take about 30-60 seconds. Avoid over-blending, as this can make the flour clumpy.
- Check for consistency: Stop the blender occasionally and give it a shake to help dislodge any unblended oats from the sides. Continue blending until the flour is uniform.
- Storage: Store your homemade oat flour in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months. It can also be frozen for longer storage.
Tips:
- Gluten Free: Make sure your oats are certified gluten-free if necessary.
- Avoid steel-cut or quick oats: Steel-cut oats are too hard and won’t blend as finely, and quick oats might create a denser flour.
- Batch size: For larger batches, it’s sometimes better to blend in smaller portions to ensure everything gets processed evenly.
How to Use Oat Flour:
- Pancakes, waffles, muffins, cookies: A great substitute for some or all of the regular flour in baking recipes.
- Thickening agent: Add a small amount to soups or sauces as a thickener.
- DIY beauty products: Mix with other ingredients for simple face masks or scrubs.
