Ingredients:
- 3-4 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs: Opt for whichever kind of chicken you prefer.
- 1 (12 oz) can Dr. Pepper: The star of the show!
- 2 cups BBQ sauce: Use your favorite brand or style of BBQ sauce.
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Optional toppings: Hamburger buns, coleslaw, pickles, sliced onions
Instructions:
- Prep the slow cooker: Spray the inside of your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray.
- Season the chicken: Place the chicken in the slow cooker. Sprinkle with onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt.
- Add the liquids: Pour the can of Dr. Pepper over the chicken. Then, generously cover everything with the BBQ sauce.
- Cook: Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4-5 hours, until the chicken is cooked through and shreds easily with two forks.
- Shred: Remove the chicken from the slow cooker and shred it on a cutting board.
- Return and adjust: Return the shredded chicken to the slow cooker and stir to coat with the sauce. If needed, add more BBQ sauce for your desired level of sauciness.
- Serve and enjoy: Build amazing sandwiches using hamburger buns and add your favorite toppings like coleslaw, pickles, and sliced onions. This also works great as tacos or over rice.
Tips:
- Spice it up: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a kick.
- Flavor variations: Experiment with different BBQ sauce styles (spicy, smoky, etc.).
- Liquid smoke: Add a touch of liquid smoke for an even deeper flavor profile.
- Other Cuts: While boneless, skinless breasts or thighs are easiest, bone-in chicken can work too – just adjust the cooking time.
